Jabalia Refugee Camp, Gaza

• Covering an area of just 1.4 square Kilometers, Jabalia camp is home to the largest number of registered refugees in the Gaza Strip.
• 90% of the water in Gaza is contaminated, and has been classified undrinkable.
• Before the second Intifada, statistics collected by United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) state that more than 21,000 Palestinian workers crossed into Israel each day via the Erez crossing, to which the camp is closely located. Since 2007 this crossing has been officially closed to pedestrian traffic, and high unemployment levels are a major challenge for the camp’s residents today.
• The extremely high population density and lack of available construction materials, means that the living conditions are extremely poor.
• People in Gaza have to live with minimal access to electricity, with outages common and unpredictable.
