As June comes to a close, the global movement for Palestinian rights has gained significant momentum. The Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign is seeing unprecedented support, with numerous organizations, celebrities, and governments standing up against the occupation of Palestinian territories.

This month, a group of high-profile celebrities, including musician Roger Waters and actress Susan Sarandon, publicly voiced their support for the Palestinian cause, condemning the ongoing violence in Gaza and urging their followers to join the BDS movement. These endorsements have brought the issue to the forefront of international discourse, particularly in the UK, where public sentiment is increasingly favoring Palestinian rights.

On the international legal front, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a historic advisory opinion on July 19, 2024, declaring Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as illegal under international law. The court also identified Israel’s actions as constituting apartheid, marking the first time the ICJ has made such a determination. This ruling has been hailed as a significant victory by human rights organizations worldwide and has placed pressure on governments to hold Israel accountable for its actions.

In response to the ICJ ruling, several countries, including South Africa and Ireland, issued strong condemnations of Israel’s actions, with discussions underway to reassess trade relations and military cooperation with Israel. These moves reflect a growing willingness among governments to take concrete steps in support of Palestinian rights.

The BDS movement also celebrated a significant victory when a major European corporation, Unilever, announced its decision to divest from Israeli companies operating in the occupied territories. This decision, which followed sustained pressure from activists, represents a crucial financial and symbolic blow to the occupation.

As these developments unfold, it is evident that the tide is turning in favor of justice for Palestine. However, much work remains to be done. We urge our supporters to continue engaging in political advocacy, lobbying your MPs, and educating others about the importance of supporting the Palestinian cause. Together, we can help build a future where peace and justice prevail.
