WHO: Gaza onslaught has brought back Poliovirus
World Health Organization’s Regional Director, Dr. Hanan Balkhy, recently made a statement that shines a light on the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the situation has reached alarming levels. The ongoing conflict has led to the deaths of over 39,000 people, with 89,000 wounded and more than 10,000 missing.
In this dire context, a new threat looms—poliovirus has been detected in Gaza’s wastewater, risking the lives of unvaccinated children, especially those under five. The health system is on the brink of collapse, with diseases like hepatitis A and diarrheal diseases spreading rapidly due to overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.
The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. WHO is sending over one million polio vaccines to Gaza, but without an immediate ceasefire, the logistics of administering these vaccines and other humanitarian aid will be severely compromised. Gaza’s already strained health infrastructure simply cannot cope with the dual threat of war and disease without international intervention.
This situation requires more than just awareness—it demands action. The “Never Again” campaign by Interpal provides a direct way for you to influence UK policy. By writing to your MP, you can urge the UK government to take a firm stand on ensuring humanitarian access to Gaza, advocating for an immediate ceasefire, and supporting the unrestricted delivery of life-saving aid and vaccines.
Visit the campaign page to find resources and guidance on contacting your MP. Your voice can be part of the collective action needed to save lives in Gaza.
The time to act is now.
