Palestinians continue to face huge barriers to their freedom and security. Poverty in refugee camps is rife and for many families, every day is a struggle. More often than not, Palestinian women are the ones who strive to hold their families and communities together against all the odds. This is despite being disproportionately affected by refugeehood and the Israeli occupation in Gaza and the West Bank.

There is nothing ordinary about women who hold together struggling families and communities under siege, displacement and occupation.

Palestinian women continue to uplift others, and now is your chance to help uplift them. Donate to Interpal's projects working with women and girls and help us ensure these extraordinary women get the opportunities and support they deserve.

Palestinian women are extraordinary, every day.

WOMEN WHO INSPIRE

Meet the extraordinary women

Interpal - #NoOrdinaryWoman - International Women's Day - Abeer
ABEER, THE OCCUPIED GAZA STRIP

The siege on Gaza has led to a sharp increase in unemployment, causing high rates of poverty, particularly among women.

Interpal’s Job Creation Programme aims to create job opportunities for workers and unemployed graduates, in order for them to acquire the skills and abilities needed to increase their chances of securing permanent positions.

Abeer joined our Job Creation programme last year. Visually impaired herself, she is the main provider in a family of three blind sisters who need special care. As a family unit they rely on Abeer’s monthly salary of $300 which is barely enough to cover their day-to-day needs, or the medical care that they all require.

Through the help of Interpal’s Job Creation Programme, Abeer turned to teaching to help provide children with visual impairments the opportunities that she lacked as a child.

Abeer is a shining example for all those women who persevere in the face of life’s many challenges. By breaking down the stigma surrounding disability in Gazan society, Abeer is proving to herself-and countless others-the strength women have to reach new heights as leaders in their fields.

Interpal - #NoOrdinaryWoman - International Women's Day - Zahra
ZAHRA, GAZA CITY, THE OCCUPIED GAZA STRIP

Zahra from Gaza City, who is completely blind, recently graduated from university with a degree in law.

She has been part of our Outreach Bus Programme, which transports students with disabilities to and from school or university.

Zahra’s father died when she was 15 years old, leaving her family without any source of income. Three members of her family are also facing disabilities and need special nursing care. The family, like thousands of families across Gaza, are totally dependent on charity aid to survive.  With her new degree, Zahra hopes to find work to help support her family. We couldn’t be prouder to be part of her journey.

NOUR, EL BUSS REFUGEE CAMP, LEBANON

“I live near El Buss Refugee Camp, for Palestinian refugees, where I work as a physiotherapist"

In the camp parents who have children with disabilities sometimes don’t fully understand how treatment can help them, and private physiotherapy sessions are expensive. But when they come here, they listen to all the information I give them and follow all my instructions. Most of the time, it’s the mothers who come. They really play a major role in the whole rehabilitation process.

Once, I treated a baby who had cerebral apraxia, which meant that she couldn’t walk. I worked with her intensely and finally, after 6 months she was able to. She was a patient I really enjoyed working with.

I think things are getting worse in the camp now though. Mainly because of the influx of new refugees, it’s really difficult to treat everyone.

This job is so rewarding, I get to know so many people, and create new relationships. Even though this job can be really sad and psychologically difficult, I love helping people and will continue to do so”.
